From Clotilde the crafty Cajun caiman to Pierre le petit pelican, this Cajun alphabet offers readers a creative and thorough introduction to the unique Southern language of the Acadians. Cartoon animals and voodoo kings pop off the pages as they invite readers to explore Cajun recipes, a
fais do-do, and a Mardi Gras extravaganza—all in alphabetical order, of course. Using an alliterative style, this collection illustrates the richly diverse Acadian culture and cuisine and preserves the Cajun language and lifestyle.
With a large French influence and a few spicy hints of Spanish, English, and Native American dialects, the Cajun language features words—such as etouffee, fromage, and gumbo—that roll off the tongue as easily as they slide across the taste buds. Providing detailed color artistry and an in-depth glossary, Lettres Acadiennes promises an entertaining and educational peek at Louisiana’s unique Cajun heritage.
