Amanda S. Nelson was a kindergarten teacher for fifteen years, and she took pride in teaching her students to love and appreciate literature. She received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Florida Gulf Coast University. While teaching, she wrote a quarterly newsletter, updated and maintained her school website, and assisted with publishing the school yearbook. By frequently reading aloud to her students, Nelson gained a keen sense of verse and sound that she applies to her writing. She believes that books should not only capture and engage children but also help them acquire necessary developmental skills. Her work draws on her extensive knowledge of children’s behaviors and preferences, as well as her own childhood growing up in the rural South.
Nelson was named the 2010 teacher of the year for Edward A. Upthegrove Elementary School. She was also honored with the prestigious Brilliant Orange Award, which is given to the best first-year teachers in Hendry County, Florida. She is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.
Nelson enjoys traveling and reading. She lives with her husband near Fort Myers, Florida.
