Doris Settles is a consultant and a speaker, specializing in Internet safety and digital citizenship. Her clients have included the University of Kentucky, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Kentucky, the National Dropout Prevention Center, and the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning. Settles’ enthusiasm for technology began at the age of seven, when her father brought home a color television, and she has been fascinated by this subject ever since.
After graduating from the University of Kentucky, with a double major in English literature and journalism, she received an MS in instructional design, because she believed that the Internet increased learning opportunities. While teaching at Lexington Community College, she implemented a website and email access for her students. She later served in the English department at the University of Kentucky, where she created an online writing center.
Settles has contributed to such publications as the Kentucky Standard, the Louisville Courier-Journal, Kentucky Monthly, Family Circle, and Woman’s World, among many others. In addition to writing for print media outlets, she wrote and hosted radio news segments. An expert in Internet safety, Settles has lectured at the International Juvenile Justice Educators Conference, the National Youth at Risk Forum, and events for the Kentucky Counseling Association.
She is a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Kentucky Young Writers Connection. When she is not reading or writing, Settles enjoys gardening. She lives in Lexington, Kentucky.
