Prof. John P. Klingman holds the Richard Koch Chair at the Tulane School of Architecture. He is also a chairman of the Architectural Review Committee of the New Orleans Historic District Landmarks Commission and a founding board member of the local chapter of DOCOMOMO (the international committee for the Documentation and Conservation of Buildings, Sites and Neighborhoods of the Modern Movement) an international organization dedicated to preserving mid-twentieth century architecture.
In addition to authoring books on the subject of architecture, he writes an annual “Best New Architecture” series for New Orleans Magazine. His expertise has been sought by such publications as the New Orleans Times Picayune, New York Times, and Dwell magazine. Klingman has lectured at architecture conferences across the country and was a presenter/panelist at Tulane University’s “Focus the Nation,” a national conversation about global climate change.
He has taught design studios and a variety of courses at the Tulane School of Architecture since his arrival in New Orleans in 1983. A registered architect, Professor Klingman is a recipient of the President’s Award for Outstanding Teaching—Tulane’s highest honor. He has been honored with the School of Architecture’s annual teaching award six times.
After Hurricane Katrina, Klingman served as a member of the Urban Planning Committee’s Sustainability Subcommittee on the Mayor’s Bring New Orleans Back Commission. He received a BS in civil engineering from Tufts University and an MArch from the University of Oregon. He also enjoys wood sculpture and furniture design. Klingman lives in New Orleans, Louisiana.
