Hermann B. Deutsch (1889-1970) was a New Orleans journalist and author born in Brüx, Austria-Hungary, now called Most, Czech Republic. He wrote a column for the New Orleans States (later the New Orleans States-Item) for more four decades. Deutsch also wrote for publications such as the Saturday Evening Post, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, Collier’s, and the Literary Digest.
Deutsch’s family moved to the United States when he was a child, and he earned his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in botany from the University of Chicago. Despite his scientific interests, Deutsch began a career in journalism with a short stint at the Chicago Journal. It was after his move to New Orleans in 1916 that Deutsch found his niche writing about Louisiana politics—especially the career of Huey P. Long—and New Orleans and its cuisine.
